Free agent Laveranues Coles is expected to be signed after working out for the Jets on Friday, according to ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini.

The Jets apparently have little confidence in David Clowney or Brad Smith to function as the No. 3 receiver while Santonio Holmes is suspended for the first month of the season. Coles showed last season that he has little left in the tank, but he's familiar with Brian Schottenheimer's offense and should be fine in the slot for four games. Needless to say, he offers zero fantasy value.

If the JETS move ahead with this, it's really telling of how they feel about their WR reserves.

Brad Smith has progressed little as a WR but is a very good special teams player and can run a "Wildcat" package. Clowney stars every preseason but disappears once the games start counting.

Coles didn't look very good last season with Cinncy, but he knows the system and could be a decent slot WR early in the year when they need him. He's adequate depth that could tunr it back around if he can stay healthy.

Clowney has never had a fair chance to do anything. Coles is going to have a rough time out there with the giant fork sticking out of his back

Clowney got some playing time early last season, but the started losing reps to Chansi Stuckey and Brad Smith before Stuckey was traded for Edwards.

Coles did catch a TD against the Jets last season in the playoffs. He's only 32. I don't think he can be a star anymore but can be decent depth. While he did drop a couple of balls last season, the Bengals passing game also didn't do him any favors.

The New York Post is reporting that "there is a strong possibility he will re-sign with the team that drafted him in 2000," the New York Jets.

The Jets will have Coles in to work out today, the paper reports, and if the 32-year-old looks healthy, he may get another shot in the Big Apple, especially since new addition Santonio Holmes(notes) has to sit out the first four games of the season due to a suspension.

If Coles is signed, it would likely take time on the field away from fellow wide receivers Brad Smith(notes) and David Clowney(notes), but not from Jerricho Cotchery(notes) and Braylon Edwards(notes).
