John Clayton Article

Great article by John Clayton on ESPN and about how more talented players are moving into the slot as it creates more matchup problems. Offenses are looking to pass to the slot more and thus an increased value on those WRs (even though they're only slot WRs. ;) )

And since it's been touched on before (BeenLurkn or intangibles?), even if a starting WR moves into the slot, it still means that with an increased importance on the slot, slot WRs have a better opportunity to make an impact, improve, and become "full-time" starters.

I've always thought the slot was the most dangerous position, because they have more field to work with and typically they end up being covered by a linebacker or a safety.

Of course, teams move can key personnel into those positions through motion before the snap, so I don't think you necessarily need a guy just for the slot... But having an effective slot guy can be largely beneficial to a passing game. And teams that can move a TE into the slot, (Dallas Clark, J. Finley), have even more of an advantage... now they can show run and motion into pass formation, causing a decent mismatch.
